# What to use instead of Morningstar Portfolio Manager and X-Ray

Morningstar retired Portfolio Manager and X-Ray on its UK, European, Canadian and Asian sites in June 2025. What now covers the tracking and the look-through.

## Replacements

*Ordered by how much of the original’s job each one covers, closest first. Paid placement does not affect this order.*

1. [Sharesight](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/sharesight.md) — The nearest whole Portfolio Manager — trades, dividends and returns across 60-plus exchanges and managed funds, billed in pounds, euros or dollars.
2. [Parqet](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/parqet.md) — The one tracker in the catalogue with a fund look-through it calls X-Ray, on the EUR 11.99 Plus plan, built for German brokers and German-venue prices.
3. [Portfolio Performance](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/portfolio-performance.md) — Free and on your own disk, so nobody can retire it — time-weighted return, IRR and an allocation you classify, fed by European broker statements.
4. [Ghostfolio](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/ghostfolio.md) — Open source, self-hosted or 48 dollars a year hosted — holdings across currencies, broken down by asset class, sector and country.
5. [justETF](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/justetf.md) — For a portfolio of UCITS ETFs — returns with and without costs and an asset allocation, free for one portfolio, billed in pounds on the UK site.
6. [Snowball Analytics](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/snowball-analytics.md) — For the income view — a dividend calendar and forward income across 70-plus exchanges, with UK and European brokers linked on paid plans.
7. [ETF Research Center](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/etf-research-center.md) — The Instant X-Ray job for ETFs only — pairwise holdings overlap free with an account, over US, Canadian and UCITS funds, London listings included.

## The product

Outside the US, Morningstar ran a set of country sites — the UK, continental Europe, Canada, parts
of Asia — and on them Portfolio Manager was the free part people actually used. You entered your
holdings, funds included, and the site tracked them. Its companion was X-Ray: an archived copy of
the UK overview page from February 2025 describes it drilling "down into your funds' underlying
holdings" to find stock overlap, and showing the portfolio's "overall P/E ratio, interest rate
sensitivity and investment style" with its split by region, sector, stocks, bonds and cash.
Instant X-Ray did the same without an account — an archived copy from March 2025 takes funds and
percentage or pound allocations, and offers views for asset allocation, stock style, stock sector,
world regions, stock overlap and bond style, against a benchmark you picked.

On 15 April 2025 Morningstar published "Upcoming changes to our membership offerings, tools, and
features" on its global site, and the UK and Canadian copies carry the same text. It covered its
"media sites for Europe, Canada, and Asia". No new Premium memberships from 17 April 2025; every
Premium and free membership converted to a free registered account; and five things retired:
"Portfolio Manager (for both Premium and free members)", stock analyst research, "X-Ray and
Instant X-Ray", price and company alerts, and Morningstar ratings inside the stock screener. The
reason given was that usage "showed that we needed to shift our focus from portfolio monitoring"
to researching investments.

The notice gives no single day for Portfolio Manager. It says members could keep using their
memberships "without disruption" until the new global site launched in June 2025, and its editor's
note dates that switchover's retirements to 27 June 2025 — which is the date this page records.
The Internet Archive has the UK Portfolio Manager page live on 22 May 2025 and redirecting by 2
July 2025. Premium members were promised prorated refunds from early July and everyone a portfolio
download "starting in July 2025".

On 8 October 2026 the old UK Portfolio Manager and Instant X-Ray addresses and the Canadian
Portfolio Manager address all redirect to Morningstar's new home pages, and the Canadian X-Ray
address redirects to the announcement itself. The announcement page answers scripted requests with
a bot check, so the text above was read from archived copies dated 12 July 2025, 31 December 2025
and 11 July 2026.

Two things this did not touch. The US product, Morningstar Investor, still has X-Ray and is
covered by its own page, [what to use instead of Morningstar
Investor](https://stockmarketstack.com/alternatives/morningstar-investor). And Morningstar's Australian site still sells
Morningstar Investor with Portfolio X-Ray and, by its own landing page, a
[Sharesight](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/sharesight) Standard plan included — there, the tracker is a third party's,
bundled in.

## What to use instead

Portfolio Manager was two jobs, and nothing here does both for a UK or Canadian reader at
Morningstar's price, which was nothing. Decide which one you miss.

**If you miss the tracker**, [Sharesight](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/sharesight) is the closest in shape: trades,
dividends, splits and currency across 60-plus exchanges and managed funds, money-weighted returns,
prices set per country rather than converted — Standard is £18.67 or €22.67 a month, C$31 in
Canada, and the free plan holds ten holdings. Canadians get a real CRA capital gains report; UK
investors get average cost, not Section 104 pooling. Two free routes keep the data on your own
machine, which after this episode is the point: [Portfolio
Performance](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/portfolio-performance), a desktop app that reads PDF statements from more than
90 banks and brokers, weighted to Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and
[Ghostfolio](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/ghostfolio), self-hosted and open source with a 48-dollar hosted option. The
[three-way comparison](https://stockmarketstack.com/compare/ghostfolio-vs-portfolio-performance-vs-wealthfolio) covers which
of the free ones suits whom.

**If you miss X-Ray**, the honest answer is narrower. [Parqet](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/parqet) is the only tracker
in this catalogue with a look-through it calls X-Ray, from its EUR 11.99 Plus plan — but it is
built for German brokers, and prices come from German venues. For a portfolio of ETFs, [ETF
Research Center](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/etf-research-center) shows the overlap between any two equity ETFs, US,
Canadian or UCITS, on a free account, and its Portfolio Builder shows sector and country exposure
of an all-ETF mix. [justETF](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/justetf) tracks a UCITS ETF portfolio with time-weighted
returns and an allocation view, one portfolio free.

**If what you watched was income**, [Snowball Analytics](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/snowball-analytics) is a tracker
built around the dividend calendar and forward income, over 70-plus exchanges, with broker linking
for UK and European accounts from its 7.99-dollar Starter plan. It sells its own dividend rating
too; the calendar works without it.

## What you give up

**Look-through on funds that are not ETFs.** X-Ray drew on Morningstar's own fund database, so
on the UK site it could look inside the OEICs and unit trusts it rated, not only ETFs. Every
look-through on this page works on ETF holdings, and ETF Research Center's overlap is equity
ETFs only. A portfolio of UK active funds has no replacement here at any price.

**Style and bond statistics.** The style box and the bond style and interest-rate views were
Morningstar's own classifications, computed on its data, and nothing on this page computes them.
The trackers show sector and country splits, not value against growth. ETF Research Center's
valuation roll-up for an all-ETF mix is the nearest thing to X-Ray's portfolio P/E.

**Free, with no cap.** Portfolio Manager cost a free member nothing and set no holdings limit we
know of. The free replacements trade that for something: ten holdings on Sharesight's free plan,
with sold positions counting; one portfolio on justETF; your own time importing statements into
Portfolio Performance, or running a server for Ghostfolio.

## Migration notes

**Find the export before you rebuild from memory.** Morningstar promised a portfolio download from
July 2025, and users on the Portfolio Performance forum reported a CSV export under My Account,
available until 31 December 2025. We could not find either the format or the deadline on a
Morningstar page, nor whether the export still works. If you saved the file, it is the list of
holdings; if not, your platform's statements are the better source anyway — see [importing a
broker CSV into a tracker](https://stockmarketstack.com/how-to/import-a-broker-csv-into-a-portfolio-tracker).

**Match funds by ISIN, not by name.** UK and European funds come in several share classes whose
names differ by a word or two — accumulation against income, clean against legacy, hedged against
unhedged — and each has its own price. Parqet finds securities by ISIN; in any tracker, check that
the ISIN it matched is the class you hold. See [security
identifiers](https://stockmarketstack.com/guides/cusip-isin-figi-identifiers) for why the ISIN is the safe key.

**Expect a different return number.** Sharesight reports a money-weighted return; Portfolio
Performance and Parqet report a true time-weighted one and an IRR. Neither will match a figure you
remember from Portfolio Manager, and that is method, not error — see [why your tracker and broker
disagree](https://stockmarketstack.com/guides/why-your-tracker-and-broker-disagree) and [time-weighted
return](https://stockmarketstack.com/glossary/time-weighted-return).

**Your watchlists are still there.** Morningstar migrated them to the registered account, along
with free fund and ETF research and ratings. A watchlist has no quantities or trades, so it is a
list of tickers to re-enter, not a portfolio.

## FAQ

### When did Morningstar retire Portfolio Manager and X-Ray?

Morningstar announced it on 15 April 2025 and stopped selling Premium on 17 April. Its notice said members could keep using the old tools until the new global site launched in June 2025, and dated that switchover's retirements to 27 June 2025. An archived copy of the UK Portfolio Manager page was live on 22 May 2025 and redirected to the new home page by 2 July 2025.

### Which Morningstar sites did this affect?

The notice names Morningstar's sites for Europe, Canada and Asia, and the UK copy carries it too. It does not mention the US or Australia. Morningstar Investor in the US still has a portfolio with X-Ray, and Morningstar's Australian site, read on 8 October 2026, still sells a subscription with Portfolio X-Ray and a Sharesight tracker plan included.

### Can I still download my old Morningstar portfolio?

Morningstar promised a portfolio data download from July 2025. Users on the Portfolio Performance forum reported in August 2025 that it was a CSV export under My Account, available until 31 December 2025. We found no Morningstar page that confirms that deadline or says whether the export still works on 8 October 2026.

### Is there a free replacement for Instant X-Ray?

Not a whole one. ETF Research Center shows the full overlap between two equity ETFs on a free account, and Trackinsight's free account builds two portfolios from weights. Neither looks through an OEIC, a unit trust or an investment trust the way Instant X-Ray did. Parqet's X-Ray is closer, and costs EUR 11.99 a month.

### What did Morningstar keep on its non-US sites?

According to the same notice, watchlists, quote pages, the fund, ETF and stock screeners, fund and ETF analyst research and ratings, articles and newsletters. Stock analyst research, price and company alerts, and Morningstar ratings inside the stock screener were retired along with Portfolio Manager and both X-Rays.
