# What to use instead of NinjaTrader

NinjaTrader is a Windows futures platform paid for in commissions. What runs on a Mac, what trades stocks, what you can own outright, and what does not port.

## Replacements

*Ordered by how much of the original’s job each one covers, closest first. Paid placement does not affect this order.*

1. [Sierra Chart](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/sierra-chart.md) — The same job — DOM, order flow, backtests and automation on futures — with any of several brokers, rented from 36 dollars a month, and C++ in place of C#.
2. [MultiCharts](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/multicharts.md) — Charting, backtesting and order routing to the broker you choose, on a 1,499 lifetime licence; PowerLanguage or C#, little order flow.
3. [Quantower](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/quantower.md) — DOM, footprint and C# strategies across 68 connections, futures and stocks alike, with a free tier that places live orders. Windows only.
4. [MotiveWave](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/motivewave.md) — The answer to NinjaTrader for Mac — a Java desktop for macOS, Windows and Linux with strategies, backtests and an order-flow pack, sold monthly or outright.
5. [ATAS](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/atas.md) — Footprint and a market-by-order DOM for futures, with a NinjaTrader connector and a native macOS beta; no strategy backtester.
6. [Bookmap](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/bookmap.md) — If the order book itself is what you watch — drawn as a heatmap over time, on Windows, macOS and Linux; order entry needs the 99-dollar Global Plus plan.
7. [Jigsaw daytradr](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/jigsaw-trading.md) — DOM and tape reading on a 579-dollar licence bought once, which can attach to NinjaTrader 8 instead of replacing it. No scripting.
8. [TradingView](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/tradingview.md) — Charts on any machine, Mac included, and order entry on a NinjaTrader Brokerage account; Pine strategies cannot place their own orders.

## The product

[NinjaTrader](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/ninjatrader) is on this catalogue as a card of its own, and that card is the
canonical page for it: pricing, brokerage terms, data fees and limitations, verified against
ninjatrader.com in mid-September 2026. This page exists because "NinjaTrader alternative" is what
people type, and the figures about NinjaTrader below come from the card. We re-read the
pricing page on 9 October 2026 and the plans had not moved.

NinjaTrader is a Windows desktop platform built around futures execution: chart trading, a
SuperDOM, Order Flow+ with volumetric bars, delta and volume profile, and strategies in
NinjaScript, a C# dialect compiled inside the platform, tested in a Strategy Analyzer with
optimisation, walk-forward and Monte Carlo. The software is free to run. You pay in commissions,
because NinjaTrader is also the futures broker: $0.39 per side on a Micro contract on the Free
plan, $0.29 on the $99-a-month plan, $0.09 on the $1,499 lifetime licence. Exchange, clearing and
NFA fees come on top of all three.

That arrangement is why people look elsewhere, and the reasons are specific:

- **It does not run on a Mac.** NinjaTrader's minimum system requirements, read on 9 October
2026, list Windows 11 or Windows Server 2016 and later, 64-bit, and .NET Framework 4.8. The web
and mobile clients chart and trade, but do not compile or run NinjaScript.
- **The cheap path is tied to one broker.** Every headline price applies to accounts NinjaTrader
clears itself. Interactive Brokers, CQG and other brokers and data feeds connect only through a
  Multi-Broker add-on at $99 a month.
- **It is a futures platform.** NinjaTrader's own brokerage covers futures exchanges only. Stocks
and forex need that add-on and another broker.
- **Order flow is locked behind funding.** Real-time data, Market Replay, Order Flow+ and the
Pulse indicator stay off until a live account holds money, and switch off again at the next
renewal if the balance returns to zero.

If what you do is chart-trade futures at NinjaTrader's brokerage from a Windows PC, none of these
applies, and the [NinjaTrader vs Sierra Chart vs MultiCharts](https://stockmarketstack.com/compare/ninjatrader-vs-sierra-chart-vs-multicharts)
page shows how far the free plan goes before a licence pays for itself.

## What to use instead

**The same job with another broker.** [Sierra Chart](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/sierra-chart) charts, trades from a
DOM, backtests and automates futures, and connects to Interactive Brokers, CQG, Rithmic, LMAX and
its own Denali feed. Order flow on a live connection starts at Package 11, $46 a month, and
Package 10 at $36 connects without the advanced studies. It is Windows only, its studies are C++,
and it has no visual strategy builder. [MultiCharts](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/multicharts) is the platform for a
strategy trader more than a DOM trader. It does charting, backtesting and order routing to the
broker you choose, for $99 a month, $79 billed annually or $1,499 outright. It ships no data, and
its order-flow tooling is thin next to NinjaTrader's.

**Stocks as well as futures.** [Quantower](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/quantower) lists 68 connections: futures
through CQG, Rithmic and the prop-firm gateways, stocks through Interactive Brokers, Alpaca,
Tradier and LYNX. The free tier places live orders on one connection, and its C# API, free on
every licence, writes indicators and strategies that backtest and optimise. Multi-Asset at $50 a
month adds volume analysis and unlimited connections, and All-in-One at $70 adds TPO and DOM
Surface. It is also Windows only.

**A Mac.** [MotiveWave](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/motivewave) is a Java desktop for macOS, Windows and Linux,
connecting to more than 30 brokers and feeds. The Standard edition at $24 a month adds live
trading, the Order Flow edition at $49 adds the order-flow pack, and strategies with backtesting
start at PRO, $99 a month or $1,495 bought outright. It is built around Elliott Wave, and you pay
for that only on the EW editions. [Bookmap](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/bookmap) has desktop builds for Windows, macOS
and Linux. [ATAS](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/atas) is Windows, but its rebuilt ATAS X runs natively on macOS Tahoe or
later as a beta that is not yet a full replica of the classic platform, for every user regardless
of plan. Or keep NinjaTrader's brokerage and drop the desktop:
[TradingView](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/tradingview) runs on a Mac and can place orders on a NinjaTrader Brokerage
account, which the NinjaTrader pricing page lists among the integrations every plan includes.

**Order flow as the main event.** [Bookmap](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/bookmap) draws the order book as a heatmap
over time, with market-by-order depth on CME futures. Live CME depth costs $83 a month
with BookmapData, and order entry from the chart needs Global Plus at $99. ATAS reads executed
volume in footprint and cluster charts; Pro at €69.95 a month is the first tier that connects
real-time futures data. [Jigsaw daytradr](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/jigsaw-trading) is DOM and tape reading on a
$579 licence bought once, plus $50 a month for live exchange-routed trading. ATAS and Jigsaw both
list a NinjaTrader connection among their connectors, so either can sit beside NinjaTrader rather
than replace it. The [Bookmap vs Jigsaw vs ATAS](https://stockmarketstack.com/compare/bookmap-vs-jigsaw-vs-atas) page goes
through all three.

## What you give up

**A platform that costs nothing until you trade.** NinjaTrader's Free plan has no platform fee:
charting, backtesting and the simulator run with no funding and no time limit, and the price is
in the commission. Of the picks, only Quantower places live orders for free, and only on one
connection. Everything else is a subscription or a licence, before your broker's commission and
before exchange data.

**The strategy tooling.** NinjaTrader's Strategy Analyzer runs optimisation, walk-forward, Monte
Carlo and multi-instrument basket tests, and the Strategy Builder writes NinjaScript for people
who do not write C#. Sierra Chart backtests one chart at a time with no portfolio-level test and
no visual builder. MultiCharts' walk-forward and Portfolio Trader are on the Advanced edition
only. ATAS, Bookmap and Jigsaw have no strategy backtester at all, which is why they sit in this
list as additions as much as replacements.

**The third-party ecosystem.** NinjaScript indicators and add-ons are written for one platform.
Sierra Chart's ACSIL, MultiCharts' PowerLanguage, MotiveWave's Java SDK and Quantower's C# API all
have their own libraries, and the indicator you bought for NinjaTrader probably has no version on
the other side.

## Migration notes

**The broker comes first.** If your account is at NinjaTrader's own brokerage, check before you
pay for anything that the new platform can reach it. The cards here record that route for
TradingView, ATAS and Jigsaw. For Sierra Chart, MultiCharts, Quantower, MotiveWave and Bookmap,
the usual answer is a Rithmic or CQG account at a broker that offers one, which may mean moving
the account rather than the platform.

**Price the data on the new platform separately.** NinjaTrader bills CME non-professional
top-of-book at $12 a month for all four exchanges and full depth at $48. Sierra Chart bills its own
CME bundles, MultiCharts sells a data package at $49 a month, or $19 on an annual plan, and ATAS,
Quantower, MotiveWave and Jigsaw ship no exchange data at all. A cheaper platform with a separate
data bill can cost more than you were paying.

**Rewrite NinjaScript; do not convert it.** Even into C# on Quantower or MultiCharts .NET, the
platform calls, bar events and order handling differ. Run the old and new versions side by side on
the same historical data before trusting either. A strategy that agrees on closed bars and
disagrees live usually has a bar-timing difference, not a logic error.

**Take the trade history with you.** It is the piece a journal or a tax preparer will want later,
and it does not live in the new platform. [TradeZella](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/tradezella) lists NinjaTrader among
its automatic syncs, and [Tradervue](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/tradervue) imports it through a third-party plugin, so
connect a journal before the old account goes quiet. The
[broker trade-history how-to](https://stockmarketstack.com/how-to/export-broker-trade-history) covers the file route in general.

## FAQ

### Is there a NinjaTrader for Mac?

Not the desktop platform. NinjaTrader's own minimum requirements, read on 9 October 2026, list Windows 11 or Windows Server 2016 and later, 64-bit, with .NET Framework 4.8. Its web and mobile clients chart and trade on a Mac but do not run NinjaScript. Of the picks here, MotiveWave and Bookmap ship desktop builds for macOS and Linux, ATAS has a native macOS beta, and TradingView runs on everything.

### Is there a free alternative to NinjaTrader?

Quantower's free tier places live orders on one connection with no time limit, and includes the C# API. MotiveWave Community and ATAS Start are free but limited — MotiveWave's free edition places no live orders, and ATAS Start has delayed futures. NinjaTrader's own Free plan has no platform fee either; it charges 0.39 dollars per side on a Micro contract instead of a subscription.

### Can I trade stocks on NinjaTrader?

Only through a third-party broker, which needs the 99-dollar-a-month Multi-Broker add-on. NinjaTrader's own brokerage clears futures only. Quantower connects to stock brokers on every tier including the free one, Sierra Chart's Denali feed carries US equities, and MultiCharts and MotiveWave connect to whatever broker you bring.

### Can I take my NinjaScript strategies with me?

No. NinjaScript is a C# dialect that compiles only inside NinjaTrader. Quantower and MultiCharts .NET also use C#, so the language carries over, but no card in this catalogue documents an import, and the platform calls, order handling and bar events all differ. Sierra Chart is C++, MultiCharts' main edition is PowerLanguage and MotiveWave is Java. Budget a rewrite.
