# Stock screeners

Every tool here that filters a universe by criteria — which are screeners you sit in front of, which are endpoints, and what the free ones leave out.

A screener is a filter over a universe, and a filter is a feature, not a product — which is why
there is no "screeners" category in this catalogue and why this page exists instead. Rule 3 of the
taxonomy says a screener inside a charting platform is a flag on that card, and the flag is what
this page is built from: every card that can filter a list of securities by criteria, whichever
section it lives in. That makes the list long and mixed on purpose. The sorting below is the part
the flag cannot do.

- **A screener you sit in front of, for US stocks** — [Finviz Elite](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/finviz-elite),
  [Stock Rover](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/stock-rover), [TC2000](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/tc2000), [Barchart.com](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/barchart-com).
- **Fundamentals-first, with the financials behind the filter** — [Stock Rover](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/stock-rover),
  [GuruFocus](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/gurufocus), [TIKR](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/tikr), [Stock Analysis](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/stockanalysis),
  [Fiscal.ai](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/fiscal-ai), [Stock Unlock](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/stock-unlock).
- **Intraday scanning rather than end-of-day screening** — [Trade Ideas](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/trade-ideas),
  [TrendSpider](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/trendspider).
- **Multi-factor ranking you can backtest** — [Portfolio123](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/portfolio123).
- **Insider and institutional filings as a screen** — [OpenInsider](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/openinsider),
  [SecForm4](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/secform4), [Insider Screener](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/insider-screener),
  [Capitol Trades](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/capitol-trades).
- **Options strategies and earnings moves** — [Market Chameleon](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/market-chameleon),
  [Option Samurai](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/option-samurai), [LiveVol](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/livevol).
- **ETFs rather than stocks** — [ETF.com](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/etf-com), [justETF](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/justetf),
  [TrackInsight](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/trackinsight), [ETFreplay](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/etfreplay).
- **Dividends** — [Simply Safe Dividends](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/simply-safe-dividends),
  [DividendMax](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/dividendmax).
- **A screen over an API or an MCP server** —
  [Financial Modeling Prep](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/financial-modeling-prep), [EODHD](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/eodhd),
  [Intrinio](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/intrinio), [roic.ai](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/roic-ai), [OpenBB](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/openbb),
  [TradingView MCP](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/tradingview-mcp).

## Four things that carry the same flag

**The screener as the product.** Finviz, Stock Rover, TC2000's EasyScan, Barchart's screeners and
Portfolio123 are bought to filter. The questions that separate them are the universe (US only, or
North America, or global), whether the filter runs on end-of-day or live data, how many saved
screens and columns the tier allows, and whether the result leaves the page as a CSV. Finviz Elite
exists for the last two of those on top of the free screener; Barchart sells its screeners as a
website membership from $0 to $29.95 a month.

**The screener as a tab.** Charting platforms, research terminals and portfolio tools carry a
screener because their data makes one cheap to add: Koyfin, StockCharts, TradingView, ProRealTime,
Optuma, GuruFocus, TIKR. These are filed under the job they are bought for, and the screen is a
reason to stay rather than a reason to subscribe. Compare them on the main job first.

**The screener as a specialist.** Some filters only make sense over one kind of data, and those
products are in their own sections: insider and 13F screens over the disclosure record, options
scanners over the chain and the tape, ETF screeners over fund holdings and flows, dividend research
over payout histories. They are on this page because the flag is honest, and they are in their own
sections because a reader wanting an options scanner is not comparing it with Finviz.

**The screener as an endpoint.** A data API with a `/screener` route, a library that filters a
DataFrame, an MCP tool that takes criteria and returns tickers. These carry the flag because a
developer asking "can I screen through this" needs the answer, and they are the wrong place to
start if you wanted a website.

## Screening is end-of-day until a card says otherwise

Most screeners filter on data that updates once a day, because financials, ratios and yesterday's
close are what most filters use. A product can show real-time quotes on its chart and still run its
screen on the last close; the `data_latency` field on a card is about the data the product carries,
not a promise that every feature uses it. Intraday scanning is the exception and it is priced as
one: [Trade Ideas](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/trade-ideas) starts at $127 a month and [TrendSpider](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/trendspider)
at $82, and both are paying an exchange for the feed the scan runs on. If the filter does not need
to re-run during the session, the free end-of-day screener is not a compromise.

## The universe is the field to check before the filter list

A screener's filter list is what the marketing page shows and the universe is what decides whether
the result means anything. US-only is the norm; North America is the next step up; global
fundamentals screening is rare and sits with the research terminals and the fundamentals APIs
rather than with the classic screeners. Delisted companies are missing from nearly every universe,
so a screen run today over "ten years of history" is run over the survivors — that is a backtest
problem, not a screener problem, and [Portfolio123](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/portfolio123) is here because it is the
one that treats it as one.

## What the free tier leaves out

Free screeners stop in three places: the data is delayed or end-of-day, the export is missing, or
the number of filters, columns and saved screens is capped. The free Finviz screener has all three
limits and Elite removes them. Stock Analysis is free without an account and keeps five years of
financials behind the screen, which is more than most. The API screeners are free in the sense the
API is free — the call budget, not the screener, is what runs out. For the specialist screeners,
check the card: Insider Screener's paid tier starts at $19 a month and Simply Safe Dividends is
$468 a year with no monthly plan, which is a different kind of free-tier question.

## FAQ

### What is the best free stock screener?

For US stocks with technical and fundamental filters in a browser, the free Finviz screener is still the default and Finviz Elite is what you pay for real-time quotes and CSV export on top of it. For fundamentals at depth without an account, Stock Analysis runs a working screener over five years of financials. For insider buying, OpenInsider screens every Form 4 minutes behind EDGAR, free and with no login. Each is free for a different reason, and each stops somewhere the paid product does not.

### What is the difference between a screener and a scanner?

Time. A screener filters a universe on data that changes once a day — financials, valuation ratios, yesterday's close — and most of them run on end-of-day data even when the product shows live quotes elsewhere. A scanner re-runs the filter intraday as prices move, which is why Trade Ideas and TrendSpider charge for it and why their price buys an exchange feed as much as software. If the filter is "P/E under 12", a screener is enough; if it is "crossed the opening range in the last five minutes", only a scanner answers.

### Can I run a screen through an API instead of a website?

Yes, and that is most of why this list is as long as it is. Financial Modeling Prep, EODHD and Intrinio expose screener endpoints over REST, roic.ai adds an MCP server and Google Sheets, and OpenBB and the TradingView MCP server put a screen in front of any LLM client. What an API screener will not give you is the universe a website curates for you — you supply the tickers, or the provider's coverage does, and that coverage is a field on each card.

### Is a screener a reason to pick a charting platform?

Only if the screen is what you will use most. A screener inside a charting platform is a capability flag on the card, not a different kind of product, and the catalogue files a tool by the job it is bought for — Stock Rover is in the charting and screeners section because screening is that job, TradingView is there because charting is. If the screen is the reason you are paying, compare the screening products against each other, and treat the chart as the extra.
