# OFR Data

Treasury's stress index, repo and hedge-fund series — keyless JSON, no rate limit stated.

**Best for:** researchers tracking funding-market and hedge-fund stress from the agency that collects the data; not for prices, single-fund holdings or anything a reader would trade on.

## What it is

The Office of Financial Research is the US Treasury bureau that collects data for the Financial
Stability Oversight Council. What it publishes splits into two kinds of thing: four monitors with
data behind them — the Financial Stress Index, the Short-term Funding Monitor, the Hedge Fund
Monitor and the U.S. Money Market Fund Monitor — and two standards projects, the Financial
Instrument Reference Database and the Legal Entity Identifier, which are reference material rather
than series.

Two of the monitors have documented JSON APIs on the same host. The Short-term Funding API sits at
`data.financialresearch.gov/v1/`, the Hedge Fund API at `data.financialresearch.gov/hf/v1/`, and
they share one shape: `metadata/mnemonics`, `metadata/query` and `metadata/search` to find a
series; `series/timeseries`, `series/full`, `series/multifull` and `series/dataset` to pull one, a
list or a whole release; and `calc/spread` to difference two series server-side. `periodicity` and
`how` resample on the server — month-end, quarter-end, mean, median, sum.

## Pricing

Free, keyless and unthrottled as far as any page says. A request with no credentials returns 200
with `access-control-allow-origin: *`, so a browser page can call it directly. Work by a federal
employee carries no copyright and the legal notice only asks for credit — but several datasets
are other publishers' numbers, and that notice sends you to the copyright holder for those.

## Data & coverage

Counted through the API on 7 October 2026:

- **Short-term Funding: 442 series.** OFR's own repo release (164, daily from 22 August 2014,
preliminary through 5 October, final through 30 June 2026); money market fund holdings (42,
monthly from November 2010, latest 31 August 2026); and three republished sets — New York Fed
reference rates (30, from March 2016), primary dealer statistics (194, weekly from January 2015)
and Treasury constant-maturity yields (12, from January 1990).
- **Hedge Fund: 497 series.** Form PF aggregates (329, quarterly from Q1 2013, latest Q2 2026 —
qualifying hedge funds' gross assets stood at $13.86 trillion), CFTC Traders in Financial
  Futures (153, weekly to 15 September 2026), the Fed's dealer-financing survey (13) and FICC
sponsored repo volumes (2, from March 2020).

A live `series/timeseries` call for `FNYR-SOFR-A` returned bare `[date, value]` pairs ending at
5 October 2026, 3.89.

The **Financial Stress Index** is not in either API. Its CSV runs daily from 3 January 2000 — 6,772
rows ending 2 October 2026 — built from 33 market variables, with five category and three regional
contributions alongside the headline number. The 33 inputs themselves are not in the file.

## Limitations

- **No prices, no instruments, no companies.** Every series is an aggregate or a rate; there are
no quotes, no fundamentals, and no fund-level holdings anywhere in the service.
- **Lags differ by monitor.** Repo preliminary data arrives a day late for centrally cleared and
two for tri-party, and final repo series only quarterly. The money fund monitor showed data as of
31 August, updated 16 September; the Q2 Form PF series were last updated on 16 September. The
stress index trails by two business days.
- **Revisions overwrite.** Form PF series are labelled "current vintage, as of last update"; the
stress index was corrected in place for four days of May 2026. Only the repo release separates
  preliminary from final.
- **Primary dealer data has a hole.** 78 of its 194 series stop at 29 December 2021.
- **Documented endpoints fail.** On 7 October 2026 the Hedge Fund API's `categories` CSV endpoint
returned HTTP 502 for every category tried, and the money fund monitor's "Complete Dataset" zip
  returned 403.
- **FIRD and LEI are not data.** The instrument database is a dictionary of 3,131 field
definitions drawn from ISO 20022, FIX and ACTUS; the LEI page is a search box over GLEIF's
records, with an issuance figure dated August 2021.
- **JSON only from the API**, and no client library named on either overview page.

## Alternatives

For Treasury yields and the wider macro picture, [FRED](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/fred) carries the H.15 series with
point-in-time vintages the OFR does not offer. The euro-area counterpart to the stress index is the
ECB's composite indicator of systemic stress on the [ECB Data Portal](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/ecb-data-portal).
Fund-level money market holdings come from Form N-MFP filings on [SEC EDGAR](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/sec-edgar).

## FAQ

### Does the OFR API need a key, and what is the rate limit?

No key. The Short-term Funding and Hedge Fund API overviews both say the interface needs no tokens or registration and can be used immediately. Neither page states a rate limit, so there is no number to plan against and none to hold the OFR to.

### Is the OFR Financial Stress Index available through the API?

No. The two documented APIs cover the Short-term Funding Monitor and the Hedge Fund Monitor. The stress index is a separate CSV download from its own page — daily from 3 January 2000, with the headline index, five category contributions and three regional contributions, published with data two business days old.

### Can I get individual hedge fund or money market fund data here?

No. The Form PF series are aggregates, with blanks left deliberately to avoid disclosing individual filers, and the money market fund series are industry totals built from Form N-MFP filings. Fund-level N-MFP filings are on SEC EDGAR; Form PF filings themselves are not public.

### Can the OFR repo rates be used as a reference rate in a contract?

No. The repo release says its rates are not administered to IOSCO standards and are not intended to be referenced in contracts, and that they are volume-weighted means rather than the volume-weighted medians behind SOFR, BGCR and TGCR. For a contract rate the release points to the New York Fed's published rates.
