## What it is

sec-api.io is a commercial layer over SEC EDGAR, sold as about forty REST endpoints and one
websocket. The Query API filters 20 million filings from 1993 onwards by ticker, CIK, form type,
date and around twenty other properties; the Extractor API returns a named item out of a 10-K,
10-Q or 8-K as text rather than as a document you then have to parse; the XBRL-to-JSON converter
keys a filing's statements; the Download and PDF endpoints serve the original files from the
vendor's own infrastructure rather than from sec.gov.

Most of the value is in the structured extracts of particular forms — Forms 3, 4 and 5 as insider
transactions, 13F as institutional holdings, 13D and 13G as activist positions, 144 as restricted
sales, N-PORT, N-CEN and N-PX for funds, Form D and Regulation A for private offerings, plus
executive compensation, directors, audit fees, subsidiaries and float. A separate group covers SEC
enforcement — litigation releases, administrative proceedings, the AAER database — which nothing
else in this catalogue carries.

The operator is Data2Value GmbH; the brand, the billing and the support address are all
sec-api.io.

## Pricing

Two published prices and a quote. Personal & Startups is $55 month-to-month, $49 billed annually,
on a narrow licence — personal use, one developer, a university, or a startup under five
employees. Business Internal Use is $239 month-to-month, $199 annually, and buys roughly double
the per-second rate limits plus the endpoints the cheap tier is cut off from.

Both paid tiers include one API key and a monthly download allowance — 50 GB and 100 GB — with
overage at $0.30 per gigabyte. That is the only usage-metered part of the bill; requests are
capped per second rather than counted per month.

What the cheap tier leaves out is worth reading first, because the vendor advertises "unlimited
access to all our APIs" on the same page. Full-text search, Form ADV, 13D/13G, N-PORT, N-CEN,
N-PX, subsidiaries, outstanding shares and float, and broker-dealer FOCUS reports are all marked
unavailable on Personal & Startups. Form ADV and N-PORT are Enterprise-only on either paid tier.

## Data & coverage

US SEC filings and nothing else. 1993 to present, all 400+ EDGAR form types, 800,000+ filer
entities, 20+ million filings and 100+ million exhibits, all described as survivorship-bias-free —
delisted registrants stay in the index. A foreign issuer appears here by filing a 20-F or 40-F,
not by being listed abroad.

The pricing page puts a number on how fast a new filing reaches the API — under 300 milliseconds
after it becomes public. The Stream API is a websocket rather than a webhook, and each message is
a JSON array of filing metadata with twenty-odd properties and URLs to the documents.

There are no prices, no fundamentals beyond what the filings themselves report, and no estimates.

## Integrations

First-party clients for Python and Node, both named `sec-api` and both published from the vendor's
own GitHub organisation. A remote MCP server at `api.sec-api.io/mcp?apiKey=...` exposes the same
twenty-plus APIs as tools with nothing to install locally, and appears on every plan row including
the trial. Bulk datasets ship as pre-built archives for anyone who would rather not page through
the Query API.

## Limitations

- The free tier is 100 calls, once, ever. Nothing here is usable without a card.
- Both published prices are single-key licences and neither permits redistribution. Anything a
reader would call shipping the data — a paywalled site, a resold CSV, an app showing filings to
its own users — is Enterprise, and Enterprise has no published price.
- The $55 tier is missing nine of the advertised products, including full-text search, which the
vendor names on the same site as one of the reasons to buy this rather than use EDGAR.
- US filings only. No non-SEC disclosure, no exchange announcements, no prices.
- Downloads are metered and the extraction endpoints are the heavy ones, so a backfill across a
few thousand registrants is an overage conversation rather than a flat fee.

## Alternatives

[SEC EDGAR MCP](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/sec-edgar-mcp) is the free answer to the same job when an LLM does the
reading — AGPL, self-hosted, no credits to run out of. [BamSEC](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/bamsec) is the opposite
end, a human-facing reader with no API at all, and [Quartr API](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/quartr-api) covers earnings
calls and decks globally where this is US filings. [WhaleWisdom](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/whalewisdom) and
[OpenInsider](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/openinsider) each do one slice — 13F and Form 4 — for a reader who does not
need the other thirty endpoints. For standardised financials rather than the documents, see

## FAQ

### Is there a free tier?

No, there is a free trial. The signup gives you an API key worth 100 calls — and the vendor's own FAQ answers the obvious follow-up in one line, that the key is valid for 100 calls total rather than per month or per year. After that every request returns a 429 with a trial-limit message. Institutions evaluating the product can ask support to extend the trial to three months free of charge, against a non-binding statement of intent to buy.

### Can I republish the data in my own product?

Only on Enterprise. The pricing page splits the licence three ways — personal, business internal use, and business internal plus redistribution and reselling — and redistribution exists only in the third. Displaying filings behind your own paywall, reselling CSVs or feeding an app's users counts as redistribution, and the two published price points do not cover it.

### What does this do that the SEC's own free API does not?

Less than the vendor claims, but still a lot. EDGAR does have full-text search — the endpoint behind efts.sec.gov covers every electronically filed document since 2001 and answers anonymously — so the vendor's list of things the SEC does not offer overstates the case. What EDGAR genuinely does not publish is a query language over 20 million filings with twenty-odd filterable properties, a push stream of new filings, a 10-K section extractor, or standardised Form ADV, 13F, 144 and N-PORT tables. The vendor also notes that EDGAR blocks your IP for ten minutes if you exceed 10 requests a second, where its own Download API allows 40 and throttles only to the next second.

### Is the obvious Python package the vendor's?

Yes, in both languages, which is not always the case. `sec-api` on PyPI is published from the vendor's support address against the sec-api-io/sec-api-python repository, and `sec-api` on npm points at sec-api-io/sec-api-node. Version 1.0.36 of the Python client was uploaded in April 2026 and 4.0.8 of the Node client in April 2026.
