## What it is

An MCP server that puts SEC EDGAR behind twenty-one tools an assistant can call: ticker-to-CIK
lookup, filings by form type and date, 10-K and 10-Q section extraction, an 8-K item reader, XBRL
financial statements and segment data, and Forms 3, 4 and 5 parsed into insider transactions. It
ships as a Python package, a console script and a Docker image.

EDGAR is free and public, so the parsing is the product: XBRL figures arrive as the exact values
filed rather than as numbers a model read off a document, a 40,000-word 10-K reaches the context
window as the one section asked for, and every response carries the filing URL.

## Pricing

Free to run; the licence is the commercially material fact. The code is AGPL-3.0 — use it, modify
it, ship it commercially, but network-serve a modified version and its users are owed that modified
source under the same licence. Running the stock server inside your own company triggers nothing. A
commercial licence covering the same code without the copyleft obligation is negotiated by email;
no price list exists.

## Data & coverage

US filers only, because that is what EDGAR holds, and no prices or quotes of any kind. Structured
parsing covers 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K and Forms 3/4/5; anything else comes back as raw text. Calls go live
to the SEC with a local cache, so a filing is available as soon as EDGAR publishes it.

## Integrations

Any MCP client over stdio. A streamable-HTTP transport exists for platforms like Dify and ships no
authentication, which makes it a private-network deployment rather than a public endpoint.
`SEC_EDGAR_USER_AGENT` with a real name and email is required — the SEC blocks requests without it
— and the rate limit defaults to the SEC's ceiling of ten requests per second.

## Limitations

- No section extraction for foreign-issuer forms (20-F, 40-F), proxies (DEF 14A) or 13F holdings.
- No full-text search across filings; you filter by company, form type and date, then read.
- Nothing cross-company: no screening, no ranking, no comparison across filers.
- One maintainer. Version 1.1.0 shipped 20 August 2026, the last commit to `main` landed 21 August
2026, 357 stars and three open issues — alive, not staffed.
- AGPL-3.0 is a real constraint for anyone embedding it in a hosted product, and the alternative is
  an unpublished price.

## Alternatives

Other EDGAR MCP servers carry more permissive licences — cyanheads/secedgar-mcp-server under
Apache-2.0, edgartools-mcp under MIT — both far smaller. For parsed fundamentals rather than
filings, an API such as [Financial Modeling Prep](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/financial-modeling-prep) or [Intrinio](https://stockmarketstack.com/tools/intrinio) normalises them for a subscription.

## FAQ

### EDGAR is already free — what does this add over calling it directly?

The fetching you could write yourself; the parsing is the work. It resolves a ticker to a CIK, reads XBRL company facts as exact filed values rather than letting a model read numbers out of a document, splits a 10-K or 10-Q into business, risk factors and MD&A so only the relevant section reaches the context window, and turns Forms 3, 4 and 5 into structured transactions. Every response carries the SEC filing URL for checking.

### Can I use it inside a closed-source commercial product?

Not under the default licence. It is AGPL-3.0, so modifying it and exposing it over a network obliges you to offer users that modified source. Running the unmodified server internally is fine. A separate commercial licence removes the obligation and is arranged by email with the author; no price is published.

### Do I need an API key?

No. EDGAR is free and public. You must set SEC_EDGAR_USER_AGENT to your real name and email — the SEC blocks requests without it — and stay inside the SEC's ceiling of ten requests per second, which is the server's default setting.

### Which filings does it actually parse?

Section extraction covers 10-K and 10-Q, with a dedicated reader for 8-K items and Forms 3, 4 and 5, plus XBRL financial statements and concepts. Other forms — 20-F, DEF 14A, 13F, S-1 — come back as raw filing text you page through yourself.
