What to use instead of LSEG Eikon

The product

Eikon was the desktop terminal of the market-data business that began as Thomson Reuters' Financial & Risk division, became Refinitiv in 2018, and has been part of London Stock Exchange Group since LSEG completed its acquisition of Refinitiv on 29 January 2021. The ownership chain, and why Reuters the news agency is a separate company, is set out in who owns market data.

For most of its users Eikon was four things behind one login: a screen of quotes, charts, fundamentals and estimates; Reuters News on the desk; an Excel add-in that put the same data into workbook formulas; and the Eikon Data API, a Python library that did the same for scripts. What tied them together was one identifier — the RIC, LSEG's instrument code, IBM.N for IBM on the New York Stock Exchange and IBM.L for the London line — and one vocabulary of field codes.

LSEG launched Workspace in 2020 and moved Eikon users onto it. At midnight GMT on 30 June 2025 Eikon was withdrawn from the product line and the service ceased. LSEG's product page, as read on 26 September 2026, says so in one line and points to Workspace.

What to use instead

Most people reading this have two choices, not six: take the Workspace migration LSEG is offering, or leave. If what you used was all four pieces — the screen, Reuters News, RIC-keyed workbooks and Python scripts — Workspace is the short path, because nothing outside LSEG speaks the same identifiers and the rebuild is the cost. Leaving pays off when you used one or two of them, which is the usual case for someone whose employer or university licence ended with Eikon.

If what you had was the screen, Koyfin is the nearest in shape — global equities, funds, macro and estimates in a browser, free to start. TIKR is the narrower answer if the screen you lived in was financials and consensus.

If what you had was the Excel add-in, Wisesheets is the closest in mechanics: functions in cells, taking ranges of tickers and periods, refreshed on demand. For a full company model rather than a comps sheet, Daloopa writes reported KPIs and segment splits into your own workbook, and is quoted by sales rather than bought.

If what you had was the Python API, Financial Modeling Prep covers the fundamentals and estimates calls, and the rest of the market data APIs cover prices. OpenBB would have been the obvious layer over several of them; its company announced a wind-down on 25 August 2026, so read that card before building on it.

If what you had was consensus estimates, GuruFocus is worth a look for a reason specific to this page: its terms of use name Refinitiv as the priority source for analyst estimates, so the numbers may be the ones you were already looking at. If what you had was news as data, Bigdata.com sells licensed premium news and filings through an API. It is a retrieval service for search and LLM grounding, not a headline feed to store.

What you give up

Reuters News on the desk. LSEG sells Workspace on its Reuters News access, and nothing in this catalogue carries that feed. Bigdata.com names Benzinga, the Financial Times, MT Newswires and Risk.net among its sources; that is a different desk, and for anyone whose day began with the Reuters wire it is the loss that shows first.

One identifier across everything. In Eikon a RIC meant the same instrument in the screen, the workbook, the script and the news tag. Replacing it with three or four vendors means three or four symbologies — Wisesheets uses Yahoo-style suffixes, the APIs each have their own — and a mapping table you now maintain yourself.

Breadth and the licence around it. The picks here are equity-first. Financial Modeling Prep states it has no bond data and carries no options; Wisesheets has prices only for FX and commodities. And the self-serve plans on this page — Wisesheets, Financial Modeling Prep — are personal-use licences. A number that moved round a team in an Eikon workbook needs an enterprise agreement to do the same thing here.

Migration notes

If you are staying, the Python change is small but not zero. LSEG's own upgrade article (December 2023) maps it: import eikon as ek and ek.set_app_key() become import lseg.data as ld and ld.open_session(), ek.get_timeseries() becomes ld.get_history(), and errors are raised as exceptions instead of arriving as a second return value. ld.get_data() returns every available field when you do not name any, which quietly widens a DataFrame that downstream code indexed by position. A desktop session still needs Workspace running on the same machine.

If you are leaving, map identifiers before you move data. Every workbook and script keyed on RICs and TR. field codes needs a translation pass, and the durable key to translate through is the ISIN rather than a ticker — see CUSIP, ISIN and FIGI and symbology. Do this first: a history stored under RICs is unusable anywhere else until it is done.

Read the licence you actually had. LSEG's documentation for the Eikon Data API described it as single-user and desktop-only, with the data not leaving the desktop. Scripts that were compliant under that were compliant because they stayed on one screen. The replacements' personal plans carry similar limits under other names, and anything shown to somebody else is redistribution — a contract question to settle before a line of the new pipeline is written.

Workbooks need the add-in that wrote them. An Eikon or Workspace formula recalculates only where LSEG's add-in is installed, and a Wisesheets function only where Wisesheets is. Daloopa writes hard-coded values, which survive being emailed and do not update. Decide which you want before rebuilding a shared model.
